2013 Fall Baseball

Jericho Little League is pleased to announce our first Fall season of baseball. After the success of our 2nd season of Summer Drop-in baseball and our various all-star teams. We feel that there is an opportunity to continue the development of all our players in the fall. If your child was born between May 1st 2001 and April 30th 2003 and is keen to continue to develop their baseball skills, our Fall program promises to be exciting. The format will have players placed on one of two teams, have one hour of instruction, followed by a competitive game – the season will conclude in mid-October with the Championship game.

The first meeting will be on September 6 at Carnarvon Park and will go on successive Fridays starting at 3:45pm.

As we are a volunteer organization, we will be looking for coaches, scorekeepers, groundskeepers and umpires.

If your child is interested to play please email Stephen Molnar at swmolnar@shaw.ca. Those who respond will receive a follow up email on Tuesday Sept 3rd announcing if we have the required 24 players to proceed.

Fall Baseball Coordinator

Vancouver Westside Minor Softball

Vancouver Westside Minor Softball is Vancouver’s girl’s softball association. About 400 girls K-12 from across Vancouver play in our house and rep softball program. More information on our association can be found at www.vmsa.ca.

House signup is in January but most Little League graduates lean towards our Wildcats rep program. Our rep (equivalent to gold in soccer) teams typically have an assessment day before soccer starts in September, and practice once per week in the winter (some start in October, others in January). Like baseball, our season runs April to the end of June, with Provincials in early July.

Point Grey Fiesta Parade – June 22, 2013

317-0661-580x388.jpgIt is time to remind you of the upcoming Point Grey Fiesta and the parade that kicks off the fiesta on the morning of Saturday, June 22. This community event has been running since 1986 and Jericho Baseball has traditionally had, and would love to continue to have, a strong presence in the parade. Here is a chance for your kids (and you!) to walk up 10th Avenue waving to all the adoring fans (neighbours).

The parade starts at 10 am, however, our group will marshall between 9:30 and 9:45 in front of the TD Canada Trust/Curves at 10th and Tolmie. The organizers of the parade have allowed our group to go last so that we are able to watch the entire parade from our spot at 10th and Tolmie and then join in at the end. We hope to see a really strong presence from Jericho Baseball to close out the parade on the way to the festival at Trimble Park!

Please have your child wear his or her jersey for the parade. And, remember that at least one supervising adult will be expected to walk with a participating child, however, entire families are welcome!

Jericho Coaching Clinics

Jericho would like to thank all those parents that volunteer as coaches for our kids. Several coaches have asked for some help with training for how to teach specific aspects of pitching and hitting, as well as how to run a standard practice. We have arranged two coaching clinics with Fred Bietler of UBC baseball this season on Sunday, February 24th and Sunday, March 3rd.

Sessions run 90 minutes each with one week concentrating on teaching batting skills and the other week on teaching throwing skills. All parents interested in coaching are welcome to attend these clinics.

Please sign-up for one of the time slots, preferably matching the age group you will be participating in. If that time doesn’t work, please use the next age group up. Just sign-up for just one session even if you will be coaching in multiple age groups. To sign-up, go to the google spreadsheet below and write in your name, email address and team age group or division:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AohfQ4m9yedxdE5GTFNRWjdpUHBubTRaZDFOXzgxb2c#gid=0

Bring your glove to the sessions and be ready to participate in the drills. The clinics will be held rain or shine. The sessions will take place at UBC Mizuno School of Baseball. Parking is available
off of East Mall or in the lot behind the Allan McGavin Sports Physiotherapy centre. See: http://goo.gl/maps/Aihn8

Help us spread the word and encourage other parents who might be able to help with team coaching to sign up even if they have not yet volunteered.

Batting Cage Upgrades

The Carnarvon batting cage has been upgraded with an artificial turf floor, wind/rain screens, new balls, and new pitching machine pads. The hope is to keep the balls clean so that the pitching machine throws a little more consistently. Or even better, have someone hand pitch to your player with the L-screen in place.

In any case, you have the opportunity to take your kids out to the cage throughout the off-season. Hopefully, we can keep the winter rust to a minimum and make up some of the offensive gap we seem to have with respect to other local leagues.

Contact any coach to get a key to the batting cage. Right now, we don’t have a reservation system in place. If the cage is busy, why not work out together and make a competition out of it? One run for a line drive off the side walls, two runs for a liner to the back of the cage. Grounders keep you alive, three strikes and you’re out. Play 6 “innings” and see who “wins”.

Please keep the cage tidy with the balls in a bucket for the next person. Keep the cage balls in the cage. If you want to hit balls on the field, there are 2 bags of shag balls in the umpire’s equipment box.

Special thanks to Patrick Perry for spearheading these upgrades. Great job!

Happy hitting!
