Rule Changes for the 2014 Season

Residency and School Attendance Eligibility
In an effort to accommodate for Little Leaguers to play with their classmates, and ease the burden on parents and guardians, Little League has amended its residency requirements to allow children to play in the local league whose boundaries where they attend school is located. To verify enrollment, parents will need to bring an official school document, such as a report card or school enrollment form, confirming enrollment in the school for the current academic year, dated before October 1, 2013. Read the full text of the new rule here.

“Little League is always looking for more ways to give all children the opportunity to have the best Little League experience possible,” said Patrick Wilson, Little League Senior Vice President of Operations and Program Development. “This new rule will provide more flexibility for families to participate in the leagues that best fits their children.”

Jericho Coaching Clinics

Jericho would like to thank all those parents that volunteer as coaches for our kids. Several coaches have asked for some help with training for how to teach specific aspects of pitching and hitting, as well as how to run a standard practice. We have arranged three coaching clinics with Fred Bietler of UBC baseball this season on Sundays: Feb. 9, Feb. 16, and Mar. 2.

Sessions run 90 minutes each with sessions concentrating batting, throwing, and fielding skills. All parents interested in coaching are welcome to attend these clinics.

Please sign-up for one of the time slots, preferably matching the age group you will be participating in. If that time doesn’t work, please use the next age group up. Just sign-up for just one session even if you will be coaching in multiple age groups. To sign-up, go to the google spreadsheet below and write in your name, email address and team age group or division:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ao2gy1NnKgx2dDhLWV95TnBZUjY1NVc4czU1REpCeGc&usp=sharing

Bring your glove to the sessions and be ready to participate in the drills. The clinics will be held rain or shine. The sessions will take place at UBC Mizuno School of Baseball. Parking is available
off of East Mall or in the lot behind the Allan McGavin Sports Physiotherapy centre. See: http://goo.gl/maps/Aihn8

Help us spread the word and encourage other parents who might be able to help with team coaching to sign up even if they have not yet volunteered.

Baseball gear for new players

All players (except Blast Ball) will need to supply their own baseball batting helmet, baseball glove, and jock. Baseball pants and cleats are recommended.

Quality baseball equipment for new players can be purchased at our sponsor Abbies Sports Shop ( http://www.abbiessports.com/ ).

Just say you’re registered with Jericho Little League to get a 10% discount.

Batting Cage Upgrades

The Carnarvon batting cage has been upgraded with an artificial turf floor, wind/rain screens, new balls, and new pitching machine pads. The hope is to keep the balls clean so that the pitching machine throws a little more consistently. Or even better, have someone hand pitch to your player with the L-screen in place.

In any case, you have the opportunity to take your kids out to the cage throughout the off-season. Hopefully, we can keep the winter rust to a minimum and make up some of the offensive gap we seem to have with respect to other local leagues.

Contact any coach to get a key to the batting cage. Right now, we don’t have a reservation system in place. If the cage is busy, why not work out together and make a competition out of it? One run for a line drive off the side walls, two runs for a liner to the back of the cage. Grounders keep you alive, three strikes and you’re out. Play 6 “innings” and see who “wins”.

Please keep the cage tidy with the balls in a bucket for the next person. Keep the cage balls in the cage. If you want to hit balls on the field, there are 2 bags of shag balls in the umpire’s equipment box.

Special thanks to Patrick Perry for spearheading these upgrades. Great job!

Happy hitting!

Baseball gear for new players

Prostock Gear DealAll players (except Blast Ball) will need to supply their own baseball batting helmet, baseball glove, and jock. Baseball pants and cleats are recommended.

Quality baseball equipment for new players can be purchased at our sponsor and equipment supplier – Prostock Athletic Supply ( http://www.goprostock.com ).

See the attached flyer for a special deal on equipment for new players.

Bat rules and specifications for the 2014 season:

Bats with an aluminum barrel (even if they have a composite handle) are allowed if they meet the specifications below (Rule 1.10):

Little League bats shall not be more than thirty-three (33) inches in length nor more than two and one-quarter (2¼) inches in diameter. Bats shall be labeled with a BPF (bat performance factor) of 1.15 or less.

Information Regarding Concussions

Little League Baseball has always been at the forefront regarding the safety and well-being of children. In keeping with its focus on protecting the health, safety and welfare of children, Jericho Little League strongly encourages all coaches to review the information and training materials on concussions which is available (free of charge) on the Centers For Disease Control website .

Heads Up: Concussion in Youth Sports is a free, online, 30 minute course available to coaches, parents, and others helping to keep athletes safe from concussion. It features interviews with leading experts, dynamic graphics and interactive exercises, and compelling storytelling to help you recognize a concussion and know how to respond if you think that your athlete might have a concussion.

Additionally, all parents and athletes should review the two page concussion information sheet available here .

Thank you for your time and dedication towards keeping our young athletes safe and healthy.
